"Space is the Breath of Art" - Frank Lloyd Wright
I started embroidering by following pictures that I saw on Pinterest and other sites, but it developed into a desire to create my own designs. I am inspired by landscapes, probably because of my deep Wanderlust and love of wide open spaces.
This piece was created in Crete, near Rethymno, at a villa we adore, and return to every summer. I feel restored after every holiday, refreshed by being in the beautiful mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities. The only sounds are the crickets and the goats' bells, and the swallows (swifts?) dipping into the pool every afternoon at about 3pm when the goatherd brings the goats down the lane in front of the villa into the olive groves below.
The views, as the sun sets, are superb. As you stand, glass of wine in hand, watching the sun set, you feel part of the fabric of the land and the long history it has seen.
Feeling insignificant brings perspective to my life and the stresses and strains that seem to loom and overwhelm me in difficult times.
This is one of the views that inspired my embroidery. We were late for a dinner booking, but I had to stop the car to take a few snaps - the light shining on the small chapel in the middle of the picture caught my eye.
I embroidered the majority of the picture from this sunbed with this view, loving every minute.
The quiet inspired me and started my husband's and my dream of opening a retreat (see 'About Me') - although I'm not sure we could guarantee the sunshine in the UK!
